My oh my

* free writing to try and triage my feelings*

I have time at home today, my car is being serviced, as it now has 280,000 miles on it. I used to commute everyday to the town my parents live in and then when we quarantined I stopped. Now I am doing it again, most weeks. My father has graduated to out patient therapies, no more home therapy visits.

So that is progress, but he still has short term memory loss and balance issues. I am there sometimes 5 times a week, sometimes three days so I can go to my doctor visits and get a yoga class in and cook and clean up my home...and if it works out, see and snuggle my hubby.

I set up my parents with all the visits for outpatient therapy which has them attending until the end of August, as well as a monthly membership to a non-profit that specializes in brain injury. My father attends in person classes for brain workouts, physical fitness and group support. My mother attends as well to watch and sometimes participate too. I have her set up in monthly peer support group and have paved the way for her to access additional resources for more therapy as well as respite care should she choose to access it.

She has spent a long time putting herself in the back seat and as gently or forcefully I offer to assist her with getting her medical appointments up to date she pushes back and keeps things very close to her chest. So I struggle daily with explaining things over and over and over again to her. I am often her therapist explaining how things are not ever going back to how they were and that this is the new normal. She asks again hours later, like I am that magical fridge that you open the door to and new things appear. As you would imagine this is exhausting, heartbreaking and I have put all the rest of my life on hold while I set this all up and get it rolling into place.

My father doesn't do what my mother hopes for and my mother doesn't accept/realize this is not going to magically change. So instead she just keeps her teeth locked into her desires and refuses to listen to the present, instead she hyper focuses on things he is doing "wrong". When I was there last they were bickering the whole time, and it was beyond exhausting to witness.

My mother was mad at something my father couldn't answer and he was confused what he had done wrong and then eventually was just confused, as he had no clue what was making my mother mad and snappy at him. She in turn felt that he was avoiding the topic all together. My mother has two senior cats that are 17yr old and are having accidents from time to time. My father suggested it was time to "get rid of them" my mother was very hurt by this (understandably) but didn't consider the source and so she just held it as a personal attack. She told me she held her tongue and didn't say what she was thinking which was "maybe we should get rid of you too" So that was a right move on her part...and the day progressed like that. They attended a peer group later and my mother said that my father had a great time and he told me he had a great time and then when asked the next morning, he said he didn't. And so it goes over and over.

Meanwhile I am feeling less and less visible. When my dad finally came home from rehab, we were focused on his safety, and we still are, but are starting to relax a little, but as this was all starting I got an avalanche of news that I have been carrying like a heavy load:

My aunt and uncle were both diagnosed with cancer, the woman I used to nanny for who I am still very much in touch with, is now an adult and back in the hospital awaiting a heart and kidney transplant, my medicine had to change because I developed a complication to my Crohns/colitis, one of my closest friends decided they were developing feelings for me and couldn't bare that I was married and cut off talking to me and asked me to not reach out to them, a fellow woman I mediate with for the last few years had a her breast removed because she has breast cancer and is starting chemo and yesterday I was laid off from my job.

I have not been able to go to yoga regularly, make artwork or spend real quality time with my hubby. My birthday came and went with not much to define it from one day to another. I  got a card from hubby telling me that he couldn't think of something special to do and that he loved me. When I mentioned how I was feeling to a doctor I went to see one for ear pain, it was just accepted as this is life. We are all overwhelmed and sad....get used to it. ( I mean it felt like that, I don't remember what she said actually...accept to not offer much)

My bestie flew into town to help her mom organize some things and we had a hot 18 hours together. I drove into town to get her, arranged for us to have a massage and lunch and then drove her back to her moms. It was nice to see her, but the whole experience was a lot, and honestly not very relaxing for me.

Is this the new normal? Is this what I am needing to fold my mind into for my life now?

I am spending today writing out these thoughts in hopes to release some of them and free up some mental space to rethink about what I want and how to hustle some new gigs that could land some cash into my hands.... mostly I just want to run away. I feel badly thinking that I didn't sign up for this and how deeply sad and invisible I feel.

52 like a deck of cards

How my birthday weekend started.

I thought I had simply overate, but my stomach thought differently and proceeded to make the next 24hours living hell for me. It was when I started to vomit blood that The Barren started panicking.

(it was not a lot of blood according to the doctor, so the level of terror The Barren displayed was misdirected and I was not bleeding out)

He started screaming that we needed to go to the ER, I meanwhile was hunched over a toilet discarding whatever was below my toenails was unable to stand.
YET I was still convinced I didn't need the ER, anything but a DOCTOR or an emergency room or any medical person for that matter... but we got to the ER and as soon as I walked into the door, I felt fine.

The Barren was shocked, I in turn was not. I was terrified of what lay before me and I think went into total trauma mode. We got in quick and of course the nurses were amazing, the doctor was confused why I was asking so many questions and asked if I was in the medical field...and I told him that I was familiar with pain, and emergency rooms and I was someone with stage 4 endo.

He offered pain meds and I refused. Then I sat there for a moment with the nurse and said, I should give my body the option to be comfortable, and not just sit with discomfort.*

* I later reflected on this concept of being uncomfortable and sitting with it and dismissing aides to medically make things better. I felt like my mother taught me to "buck up" and manage it alone, in solitude and you'll get past it, eventually. I am glad I recognized this while in the ER and able to make those elements dissipate.

So I got some light drug to mostly numb my stomach and all my blood tests were good so it was diagnosed as acute gastritis.

No spicy, oily food. No alcohol or caffeine.

Happy birthday!

I am on stomach drugs for two weeks and a bland diet.

The next day I was back to normal actives and when my birthday rolled around a couple days later I was my normal emotional self. I made myself some birthday cupcakes, and headed to the family home. I had loaded up my camera and I shot photos of my immediate family.

It was a relaxing quiet time, simple food and I had a bite of birthday cupcake.

okay, I ate a whole cupcake

Vanilla cake, lemon curd filling and topping.

The Barren had taken time off work so we could celebrate my birthday together....

but he neglected to make any plans, so after he berated himself for being bad at birthdays...I told him that we could freeform the days off.

I also had another epiphany:

When you are younger, you have elaborate birthday parties with friends and big Ta-dos, and as you age those sorts of moments become harder and harder. All we are trying to do is capture that same level of joy from childhood...recently when I thought about my birthday I cry. I realized that for me, it highlights my loneliness and lack of social circle. So birthdays have to become something else for me.

So I found a botanical garden, and took my cameras and photos and walked near trees and forgot all about my sadness, and about being lonely. I forgot about the ER and the pain, I just was away from it all with The Barren.

When the days off had past, I got a text from my bestie that she was coming into town for a hot 36hrs to pick up a HUGE plant from her mother and then was going back home. Then asked if I had an hour or so to hang out...I of course said yes and with The Barren in tow we met for a meal and a chat and it ended up being longer than an hour and it was like my birthday extended for another day. We took photos and she jumped back into her car and drove home 6+ hours away.

When I was with bestie, she mentioned that 52 was like a deck of cards....

I thought about that, mostly that I hadn't thought about a deck of cards being 52, but then how that relates to me. 52 options, some similar to others but each unique.

I guess the theme of my newest circle around the sun is reframing.

I am reframing how I relate to myself, the world around me and others in my life. I mean what birthday would be complete without a little existential meandering, right?!

Which card will I pull for this week?

52 cards, 52 weeks in a year...

Stupid & Contagious

***Below I ramble, mostly because it felt like a conversation with someone other than myself,
in my head. I talk about race, isolation and frustration***

I am thankful that we are all healthy and bored, let's just start there.

I visited my parents home two weeks ago to deliver food and sit in the back yard with them.
mom working the "invisible man" vibe
I walked through a side outside gate, and met them in their backyard.
It is still very foreign to still not hug them or touch them.
They gave me my birthday present from April.
We sat, made small that and then had heated discussions about race and climate and how things are never going to be like they remember them again.
We talked about the grief that surrounds that and how they are or are not dealing with it.

My father nibbled on the cookies I brought, as he rolled his eyes at me, and told me how he wanted me to act. Make no ripples, stay below the radar.
My car and the sign that made him "freak out"

My car was the reason for most of his outbursts, and me telling them that a Hell's Angel pulled up next to me and gave me a side eye at a traffic light.
Later that same day, a group of those same "angels" drove into a crowd of peaceful demonstrators narrowly avoiding children that were in attendance.

I have another sign in the other back window that says: "No Justice/ No Peace"
I have left them in my windows since our parade attendance for the local BLM rally.

I was able to calm him down and simply say, we both want to be good people, doing what is right.
I can not be silent when so so so so much is wrong.
I would not be able to sit with myself by being silent.
These are the kind of conversations that are happening all over now.

The state I love in and the country I reside in is upside down.
We are " stupid and contagious" (to quote Kurt Cobain)
We had another 550+ cases over the weekend, just in my county!
I have made and given out over 200 masks personally...
I don't know what else to do?!

I spend my days trying to make art, when I am not sewing masks.
I do all the house work and run all the errands, as The Barren* has become more and more concerned about leaving the house for ANYTHING.
I do yoga daily virtually and often times the teacher,
and anyone who has their camera turned on for class,
are the only other people I see that day.
I am terribly lonely, even with another person in the house.
(whom I love and I am thankful we are together though this...but we are both becoming more and more fragile from the isolation)

I have been staying away from the news, as every time I dip my toe into that swamp, it is far more infested with the most horrible things, that I can't really comprehend what has happened.
People talk less to each other when out at the shops.
Neighbors talk less to each other.
The beaches are crowded, the streets are full of tourists.
We are doomed to be in this home forever at this rate.
As a rule follower, I am saddened by nobody else doing the work.

I wake up each day, with a bright disposition, hopeful that I will make something lovely or moving.
Hopeful that there will be different news from this current world.
It is harder and takes serious focus to carry myself through the sludge of energy pulling me away from that brightness and hope.

My bestie and I had a facetime call the other day, we both were feeling very heavy in the heart.
it helped to see each others face, and talk real talk and admit that we are both feeling all the feels!
An old boyfriend reached out to me the other day too,
just to see how I was, it made me feel so very loved.
It sparked a long chain of emails reflecting on the things we miss, and how it sucks.

** The Barren is currently enrolled in a songwriting class and is finding great joy from that. His mood is vastly improved when he finishes each class. He has been writing and I now find him researching music theory and deep in word thought.

invisible

Image result for i see colors gif

I see colors when I close my eyes.
I first noticed it in meditation class and it was a wonderful illumination for me.
Ideas flow and colors are beacons of emotions.

No one else can see the colors I see when I close my eyes;
They are invisible to everyone else.
I had a massage last week and mentioned to the therapist that
I see a particular color when she works on my back.
She made a comment on what a lovely color it was and
mentioned that another one of her clients, sees gold when she has her feet massaged.
It unfazed her and I was validated and understood.
It was no surprise or a weirdness to her.
*sigh*

I am finding that invisibility seems to be a reoccurring theme as of late.
I feel unseen for the most part...able to pass through the day unnoticed, or forgotten.
When the feeling floods me, I tend to send out love notes to friends.
Either by text or actual cards in the mail.
I send notes of encouragement
notes of love
notes to simply tell a person they are held in high regard
notes of strength to act as floats;hoping to keep your head above water
I send notes that say Hi I am checking in on you

For the most part these are not really acknowledged.
Like my notes become invisible once I drop them into the postbox.

I continue to send them despite the lack of response.
I believe that no matter what, kindness matters.
I send them because I want to, not that I expect a response.
(but isn't it nice to know they found their person?)

The Barren keeps asking what I want to do to celebrate my upcoming birthday.
I turn 50 this year...
a number I am still baffled at, but a number that designates
how many times I have spun around that glorious ball of burning gas in the sky.

I come up empty each time he asks.
Shrinking from embarrassment.
As much as I know how much this frustrates him, I have no ideas.
He keeps asking if I want a party?
I would love a party...but
Honestly, the first thing that comes to mind is " who would come? "
I could invite all those people I send love notes to,
but I am really scared no one would show up.
It would simply highlight how untangled I am among the people I know.

We've thrown parties before where everyone who says they are coming,
calls the day of the party and tells us they can't make it...
leaving us with a table full of food and us in our PJ's dazed as to what happened.

I continue to try and reach out to people I meet at the yoga studio or in life
but keep coming up "hot potato-ed"

I know this sounds like a pity party...but I am really struggling to crack this code.
What do you do for your birthday if you are without people you spend time with?

My bestie lives a days drive away, and we have hopes to meet somewhere
half-way this year for a weekend girl getaway.
(that is something to be excited about)

I want to help hubby
Maybe if we simply go to a park and set out a picnic,
and if no one shows it would still be a nice day in a park with snacks
and not hurt as much as it feels right now.

Does anyone out there feel invisible?

One on One time

It seems to have become an annual event.
Every July we get some serious one-on-one time with our closest nephew.
Closest, meaning proximity.

*(there are two other nephews, but their parents and years of no responses to requests or cards...has created a distance in what we had hoped to be a relationship with them.)

ANYWAYS.....
this year was the longest amount of time with our nephew, he was at our place for three nights.
He is 11 and totally into Manga comics and video games and cartoons and KITTENS
Our old man cat wanted nothing to do with his attempts at snuggles or pats...
he chose to spend his time curled under my desk sleeping on the power strip and sulking
 at HIS unwanted company.

So I suggested that we go to the Humane Society and check out kittens.
I am not sure I totally thought the idea through when it came to my own mental health about seeing touching or interacting with kittens....
I am still quite broken from the loss of our kitty back in February and now the aging cat at home...
I am dealing with a lot of mortality in felines.

We went for half an hour on the first visit because we were meeting Uncle for lunch and and needed to pick up food before seeing him....I thought it would be and easy in and out...
It was easy to get in and out...but I was very standoff-ish with all kitties.
The following day he mentioned he wanted to go back and visit them again....
I figured it would be fine and it took a chunk of time of the day and it made him happy.
We returned and there were twice as many kittens and cats...
9week old kittens, to mature cats...
he wanted to snuggle them all...it made him so happy and smile so big...
I watched him, and offered help when claws were too sharp or wiggles too strong.

This sweet little kitty is the one that made me cry.
As I was handed this kitten, so he could play with another eager soul...
I held it close to my chest and it melted into purrs and I turned away from my nephew...
tears welling in my eyes, feeling the soft fur and rumbles of the purr against my chest.
Before the tears could fall, I told him that my heart hurt and that we should move on to the older cats...or dogs.
He was a little confused but was willing to move onto the next room.

The second visit was all about making sure to see and say hello to every kitten and cat, and then hello to every dog. That sweet little boy even sat with a dog that had a "I'm shy" sign on her kennel for almost a half an hour to make her feel better.
When the time came to leave, he said goodbye to every dog, cat and kitten.
and told me that he felt badly that he could not take them home.

I assured him that what he was feeling was empathy and compassion and that those are really wonderful emotions and that means that you are a loving person and capable of loving other beings.

The next morning I saw that one the kittens he was crazy about was adopted, and shared the news with him, his smile was huge...and he said- that is so great!
He is still to young to volunteer without and adult....but I mentioned it to him and his parents.

I spent three days, all day with my nephew...in the evenings The Barren made sure I took some quiet time for myself before bed.
I was exhausted, the nephew would have active dreams at night and call out waking The Barren and myself. He was fighting with his sisters in his dreams...having things taken by them. He remembers none of the dreams and awoke each morning happy and ready to be entertained.

I loved the time, and tried really hard to give him loads of space and time to just be.
Pool time, puzzle time, reading time, park time, making cookies, we even watched surfers and he declared he wanted to do that too.
I listened to exaggerated stories and claims, I sat and watched cartoons and simply soaked him in.
I introduced him to Bob Marley music and we sang along to Queen songs.

I do hope that he remembers being able to just be himself when he is with us.
I really love being his Auntie

After Party

Niece is healed
I am thankful that she can do things like lay on her stomach and exercise again.
yeah science!

My birthday came and went
birthday outfit

I started the day with yoga...
turns out, the one person I chat with in morning classes is a birthday twin!
Never in my life have I known someone else who shares my birthday!
( I will call it mine even though it is hers too)
CRAZY

I had breakfast chessecake bars with my parents,
along with an awkward but nice visit.
The Barren sent flowers to me,
he hasn't done that in years!
and then I was alone...
I wondered what to do.
I bought myself some lunch out
I went to a thrift store
and then came home again still not sure what to do with myself.

I ended the night with some couch time with the cat and then off to bed.
I think I need to plan my birthday activities far better for next year.
I am left with a feeling of disappointment in myself.

The Barren returned and will be leaving again Sunday for another week away....
I am excited about what he will be able to do while away...but I miss him terribly.

I have yet to get my period too...
seems I am already all over the board with my cycles.
I took a pregnancy test yesterday...
just to cross that off my worry list.
Now it is a worry...before it would not have been,
TRANSITIONAL THINKING anyone??
The Barren asked if it felt weird peeing on a stick again...
I said it wasn't too weird except I could hear my heart beating in my ears.

The not bleeding thing is wild, and quite a convenient feature in my day.
I am apocalypse level loaded up on tampons and pads... and if things continue like this,
I will make them into small grab bags for homeless women I encounter.

I was chatting with a yoga teacher before class the other day and she asked how I was feeling post birthday...she is a true star gazer and always keeps me in the loop about astro changes and how they are linked with mood and life...and I explained aside from the normal existential thoughts around your birthday it feels like something in percolating.

I eagerly await this wonderful new event!
I am done with negative shit

And the winner is.....

ME!!!

I spent a half an hour crying and laughing before I could even call The Barren at work.
All I did was take a photo of my computer screen and send it to him....
My hands were shaking, I was not able to speak....
The cats freaked out thinking I was in pain or something.

I am still quite in shock and working very hard on sharing this award with pride
and I keep telling myself that it is not arrogant.
I worked very hard for this and my work was recognized by a panel of professional peers
and I got some money too!
I won the creative process award, perfectly suited for what I submitted.

The magic of disco lifted and kept my mood elevated most of the day and when I finally found the information it was a HUGE shock and wonderful moment.

The Barren says I need to sit and stew in this...live and love the feeling and like Elmer J Fudd, repeat my well earned and happy mantra:

"I am an internationally awarded artist"

Goals and Birthdays

vanilla cake, lime coconut frosting vegan birthday cupcakes

I am not sure why, but I seem to always be SUPER emotional and goal oriented around my birthday.
I had set a goal for myself last year and when I didn't met it I was disappointed
but kept moving towards it.
It is something I have wanted to be able to do for longer than I can remember...
It represents a symbol of strength to me...
It is pretty badass
It is something most people can do with almost no effort

What is it?
A pushup
yep...

I have never been able to do one
I want to be able to do one, and not a "girl" push-up
but a kick-ass real deal push-up

I have been working on it for a LONG time...
and I am proud to report I did it in front of The Barren on the eve of my
48th birthday, Tuesday night.
The Barren cried he was so happy for me (heart swelling)

I am also of the camp that if it is not documented it didn't really happen
and being a visual person, I needed to photograph it
so I did:

Elbows in against my ribs
down to a 90* bend
ass up, knees off the floor
legitimate push-up folks!

Day 24-The End

91% containment

Nothing will make you feel like more of an adult than dealing with an insurance adjuster.
The saga has ended now...no more fire helicopters or sirens.
This transition has left me feeling like
I tripped and landed hard into this new reality, suddenly it is all over.

It felt similar when we realized that parenthood was not in our future or lives.
It was a bumpy transition and left me grumpy and relieved and confused.

We have a home, for that I am deeply grateful...and confused still as to how or why our home was spared...but it is time to remove the plastic from all the doors and windows.
The air purifiers are still running, I think now as a security blanket for us.

I finally put the items away that we had taken after coming back on the day after evacuation.
The forgotten precious things:
My wedding ring, a family painting from the 1800's...a photo of our wedding.
This whole process has been scary, humbling and enlightening.

the hillside across the street as we were evacuating, left and right side obscured by trees
(taken while driving away from our home)
across the street-two days ago

Not only have we been dealing with constant fire and evacuation dreams (I figure this is happening because I was woken from slumber when we got the call to leave immediately)
but The Barren has gotten chest illnesses.
The Barren has been to the walk-in clinic two weekends in a row after since the fire started.
The first visit confirmed walking pneumonia and the second confirmed a secondary bronchial irritation from the smoke and particulates.
We had both been coughing and got stuffy noses after we left...and have been wearing particle masks by day three, but that was not enough to protect us from the constant rain of ash, dust and smoke...
so much smoke.

Now we are to adjust to this new reality.
700 homes lost in our town
so many people have been touched by this fire.
Everyone has a story of the night they had to leave.

I am most touched by the stories that keep coming to light, the good in this town...
the stuff that makes you cry from being so deeply touched in the heart:

* A call went out from a family who lost their home, that they wanted to bring their dog home from the animal evacuation shelter but the fence in the home they were staying in was a little wonky and they didn't have a hammer to fix it. There was someone at their door within ten minutes.

* The fact that donations and volunteers were asked to be halted as there was too much! They had all they could use and then some.

* The firefighters asking to stop giving them food and donations, they had too much

* The local man who didn't know what to do, so he made sifters for people who lost their homes...to help them find precious items that survived

My favorite quote from a local evacuation site for livestock:
" Don't let that emu out, he is a real asshole and super hard to catch "

Everyone has been gentle with everyone...I see more hugging and listening.

I am finally able to get back to my practice too.
I found that not only had the stress taken a toll on me mentally, but physically.
I was not able to practice as the air quality was horrible for breathing
and unsafe for teachers to get to the studio.
I was also unable to travel to the town to practice because of the fire activity.
I missed my quiet community of toe touchers.
Home practice is not the same, at least for me...

So here I am trying to adjust, working on readjusting...feeling quiet still
and watching The Barren like a hawk.
I think I will peel a window open today....I am feeling hopeful.

Day 13

my grandmother always said if you feel blue, put on a bright color
She never had to accessorize with a smoke filtering mask
I am currently stress eating popcorn, and sipping CBD tea to stay calm.

We are out of the fires path, and our home is still sealed from outside smoke as the  air purifiers run 24 hours a day.
The air quality will continue to be an issue until we get rain...
which there is no sign of through the month.

This morning the phones started to explode again, this time it is north front;
where my parents and The Barrens mother lives.
40+ miles from our home.

The police and fire have closed the one freeway that is open to all traffic that is not evacuating.
We have no way to get to my parents or brother and family.
The Barren has no way to get to his mother.

We are trapped again in a different way.

The Barrens mother would be evacuated first and my parents after that...
this fire has continued to grow to the east and west of us.
Active fire on both sides.
The community to the north of us just had their orders lifted the other day.

A family member from another part of the country asked:
" What does it feel like there? I imagine people are pulling together to help each other, but it must be exhausting"
My response was:
Our town feels sad, the the community has totally come together with pop up relief centers for food water and clothing. The same for the nearby communities.
The community up the coast is ground zero today. The streets are quiet with most people evacuating or packing to prepare to leave at a moments notice. There is also active fire to the East, which is mostly farms and agriculture, so a lot of activity there to get food off the vine and save farms."

I spoke with the few farmers at the outdoor market this morning, and was told again that the field workers were not offered masks to protect themselves from the smoke and ash as they work outside. A friend of of a friend was trying to distribute masks the other day and was kicked out.
This continues to break my heart and I have been carrying extra masks with me to offer to people I encounter...the homeless community has also been effected deeply in these communites.
We have to look out for those who are overlooked.

Please be extra kind to someone today...

Beer and Cowgirl boots

It is that time of year again.
Check in on my uterus and ovaries,
make sure they don't have any new hitchhikers.

I travel to a nearby town to check into the local hospital to
have my pelvic ultrasounds.
I have found a great tech, that tells me what she sees before I get my results.
I take her observations as a no need to panic foreshadowing.
I spent too many years worrying after the exam whilst waiting for results.
So I found a person who will tell me if she see changes or give me a heads up.
She is awesome that way and has a similar fibroid and cyst situation.
We are in a sisterhood like that.
She offers respect and compassion that I seek on this crazy reproductive journey.

Today she told me a story of a client that came in last week for a pelvic ultrasound:

A woman came in kind of drunk she said....
she was wearing a skirt and cowgirl boots.
She told the tech that she was a little drunk that she choose to drink some beers
for her 30oz of clear fluid to prep for the pelvic ultrasound.
(I giggled and wondered why I never had thought of that, that makes for a personal party out of a sucky medical exam.)
After the external ultrasound, she emptied her bladder and hoped back onto the exam table in a hospital gown and her boots.
The tech thought, OK I guess this is how she rolls.
As she was performing the internal portion of the exam she proclaims to the tech:
"you know my husband always wants me to keep my boots on, and I always say no....
But for you I kept them on! "

Ahhhh the clarity of alcohol
and a vaginal probe

Circling the sun

I awoke feeling happy
I got dressed and went to yoga
I had a lovely class and felt like a million bucks

I went to my parents place to enjoy our newest ritual
birthday cake for breakfast.
As long as they are around, I figured we should have cake together
first thing in the morning
and I can thank them in person for making me.
Literally.

This year my 3 year old niece was there, so she got cake for breakfast too.
Honestly, she just wanted the icing, so I gave her mine.

I had made the cake the night before, and tried something I'd never made.

My parents and I sat and chatted and we visited for a long while.
then I packed up, took a photo of the driveway; where my mother had made chalk circles
of number 1-47 and had them lead to the front door.
(another ritual they do every year for birthdays, some sort of chalk drawing. They even did it when I was employed near their home and all my coworkers had to drive past their work, and then proceeded to come and wish me a happy birthday)
I love her shadow!

I traveled home, picking up actual food along the way and ate a quiet brunch at home.
Then a little nap
a little more food and then The Barren came home and we sat and visited until bedtime.

A quiet birthday.

We had gone into the big city the weekend prior and I took in some art gazing.
I think we are planning to do a similar adventure this weekend too,
Sightseeing, art adventures, with snacks

I have been focusing on enjoying little visits with dear people in my life.
I have gotten great pleasure from that.
Like I can feel my body respond from the positive visits.
I am aiming to do that as often as I can.
that is my birthday wish for myself.

Silence in between

I have been quiet again.
I had my HUGE annual art opening and this year I kept telling The Barren that something felt different. He told me that I was anxious each year, and that I was simply feeling that.
It turns out, that my work has yet to sell.
For the last 6years it has sold either before the show opened, or at opening night.
This year it is still hanging on the wall, unsold.
This pretty much CRUSHED my fragile and small sense of self.
I have carried this in my heart like a heavy stone.

I focused on the holidays, but after throwing up Hanukkah...
 I got a cold...it was a new years eve gift I guess...
It had me out of both society and yoga and
The Barren told me I was acting like a grumpy 14 year old.

I will own that.

I don't like being sick...I don't like my freedom of motion infringed on
in any level;
whether it is a runny nose or a sore muscle or a cough that won't let me sleep,
or a car that is out for the afternoon getting an oil change....
I am bossy and grumpy that way.

It seems the cold has finally hit the road and I am getting back into my groove.
While on "holiday" I tried to work on my relationship with food.

I have one, going vegan has made me look at food differently,
not that I had an issue before but now there is a lot of guilt
associated with food that was not there before.

Over the holiday, I worked on loosing the grip on my restrictions.
I had crackers
I had "ice cream"
I had cake
I ate bread
I ate chips
Now looking at this list I think, oh gosh look at all that bad food.
The food isn't bad, my relationship with it is.

I repeated a mantra I use when I am faced with being "decadent"
and thinking about how long it will take to make up for the decision.
exercise is not punishment for what I ate, it is a celebration of what my body can do.

I used kinder words with my self talk and simply said, you need a break.
You are doing nothing wrong eating something different here and there.

Now all the "holiday" food is out of the house
and I am eating dates to combat my sweet tooth
and drinking green tea to kick the caffeine to the curb.

Things are clearing in my head, I also realize that:
I am still reeling from this election and each day, the USA seems darker and scarier.

I am trying to manage this too...
I am not watching news anymore, listening to NPR for a short time daily.
I only watch movies
FLEABAG on Netflix was fun...and dark

I am sitting in the studio a lot, staring at the wall...but I am showing up.
I am an artist, my job is to make art.

I am back at my 3-4 times a week of practice...
which is really my mental health appointment with myself.

I am excited about the Women's March in 8 days...
The Barren and I are going because we need to go!
I am trying to figure out what I want our signs to say.

Mostly I am trying to find how I fit into this new crazed place.
It may appear that I am sitting in silence, but I am really planning and plotting.
I have never been one to be quiet in the face of something that is bothering me.
It has caused problems before, but now...
My parents joked that they will put some money aside to "bail me out of jail"

I have no intention of getting myself arrested
but my voice will not be silent.

Time marches on

Source

Ducklings in paper dresses....lets start here.
Okay

I have been wanting to write here.

I just got back from a weekend visit with my bestie.
We live several hundred miles apart and so visiting often is quite involved.
This time, we made arrangements a month+ ahead of time
and I got an AirBnB
and had The Barren take an extra day off to recover from the travel time.

When we arrived we hit the ground running.
My bestie talked my ear off <3 p="">
She was sooooooooo excited to see me that she just kept talking and talking and talking....
It was great and exhausting.
I ate like a queen,
and covered The Barren in kisses of appreciation
for making and supporting the time away.

The Barren was recovering/processing of sorts,
from a sudden and unexpected death of a coworker.
This time together was needed.

We spent the time away talking and being quiet and just being.
Bestie has a child, who we are close with and who is the most well adjusted
young person I have ever known.
He is an only child and has been treated as a human from day one
and it is reflected in his mood and demeanor.
The Barren and I are listed as caregivers should something horrible happen to his parents.
He was able to choose, and we were happy to be those people for him.
So it is all legal and stuff...
He is growing up fast and has landed firmly into tweenhood
Time marches on

I got this photo in my email today:
"do you recognize the blanket"
I made that blanket for her older brother as a baby shower gift.
It was a reminder of how far down this road I have traveled.
How long ago I was making blankets for friends babies, and wishing for my own.
Like a moving meditation, make a blanket, earn more points to me getting a baby of my own.
The above child was conceived while I was having miscarriages and I threw her mother a shower, thinking I could still do it all.
Once this little lady was born, I told her mom (who I've known since we were 14yrs old)
that I could not be what she needed of me...
she has respected that and we send hellos every once in a while.
Time marches on

Then today I also got an email asking if someone could use an image from my Infertility Art Exhibition....this exhibition was 6 years ago and I am still getting requests for image use.
AMAZING
time marches on

Here I am three weeks away from my first miscarriage anniversary and I am getting reminders of how long ago we left the path for parenthood but also how far we have traveled.

Day Three

My bestie got a residency here and is going to be gone for almost a month.....
out of range and texting and distractions.
I am thrilled for her, and I know she will excel with the time away from family responsibilities and work drama. She needs this time, her artwork needs this time.

It is only day three,
and I am finding myself and the inability to connect with her at any time challenging.
We normally text each other everyday
I spoke with her the night before she left and wished her well and told her to have a super fun time!
Inside I was crying, and it felt like when we were headed to different colleges.
I will miss her greatly, but can not wait to see what she makes while away.

The Barren took me into the big city to see an exhibition I had been dreaming of seeing since I was a teenager...it was a good distraction and inspiring and offered some real time with him.
Such beautiful, moving work

I was reminded of my own darkroom practice,
my desire to make images that move, confuse, and connect with people.
I cried a few times viewing the work.
Not only remembering my own days gone by,
but seeing this brilliant artist disappear before my eyes in his self portraits.
Mortality and disease

We ate a lot on our day out and away,
I even indulged in some vegan "junk food"
eating a mac n cheeze pizza!
it did have broccoli on it, in my defense

The following day was spent on site with a project I am the photographer for.
We were out in the hills and outside all day.
I almost stepped on a snake
picture of snake "walking away" from me and my foot

I have since been editing and distracted until today....today I am floating.
I will work on art for the next few days. The Barren has been working way too many hours, both at work and working at home. He is stressed and it appears that tickets we had to secure almost three months ago will go unused for another weekend getaway, as his work clients are a big drama queen.

With his extended hours and my desire to maintain a studio practice and my second job schedule and early yoga classes, we are now not often able to spend time together until the weekend...at best.
Our schedules are almost opposite of one another.

I got a text from him this morning:
" at work...feeling a bit sad and lonely. : (
hope you are doing OK"

I was nearby and offered to swing by for a hug and a kiss and a cuddle,
but he was in between meetings and couldn't break away, even for a moment.

I am thankful that we still check in with each other.
Relationships take work, everyday.
I never take that for granted, and neither does he.
I make dinner every night for us, making sure that there is always a homemade meal
at the end of a pressure ridden day.
Something made with care.
We see each other at this time and shortly there after I am off to bed
and he is still too wound up to sleep.
So we meet on the weekends.

My relationships super sucks right now,
but I an hopeful and know that many aspects are temporary.

Making white noise

So the very pregnant friend had her baby on Monday.
It was a boy, turns out the name they picked out was also the same name The Barren and I had selected for our wished one. It is not a common name so when I heard that was the name selected for a boy I did my best to hide my emotions and possession of the name,
When they announced that they would shorten the name to Gus I was relieved as that is not the love name we have used to shorten the given name...we had picked auggie.
Well, this morning she posted on social media that
"Auggie was off to see the doctor for the first time since breathing air"
My heart sunk again and now I am struggling with hearing a name that I had held so deeply
and so silently in my heart for years.

How do you give away the name?
Allow it to float away from your heart and the dreams that you had to say it to your own?

I have yet to visit...I am not sure I am ready yet.
They live just across the road so we can't use distance as a reason for not being there yet.

Until I am ready, more stable on m feet and in my heart.
I will make white noise and hold off
hold my heart
whisper my wishes

Being a grown up

So with this crazy lull in my work at the second job and my sluggish progress with my art...I am left with distractions on EVERYTHING else in life.
I had set up an IRA when I left my last traditional job and thought that over time it would work like a saving account and grow a little money over time, like dust but in dollars.
With distractions running amuck,
I figured I'd spend some time trying to dust it off and get it gathering more funds.

I went to set it up and then discovered that I hadn't logged in since I set it up almost 7 years ago...
so I got to speak with people on the phone that sound like they just got out of high school.
When the guy on the phone asked what my goal was, I explained that I wanted to add a little money to "water the account" and
by the way what is the minimum monthly investment for auto-deposit?
He told me and I told him that I was pretty sure that was doable.
He asked what other investments I had.
I (didn't laugh out loud) but instead said this is the whole enchilada.
I am a working artist, so this is what I have been able to squirrel away.
I could hear his voice change as he understood he was not talking to someone who had money but instead someone who had a LONG way before calling this a retirement account.
He was kind and mellow and is sending me a dictionary worth of information to read.

I can't stand being a grown up sometimes!
Other times there are benefits like eating whatever you want
and staying up way past your normal hour
 or
drinking

I wonder if things would have been different if  there was a kid in our lives?
I doubt it.

It takes us forever to make choices,
our friends often giggle at us because of it.
Here are some examples:
We have still not painted any of our walls since this place was built in 2003.
The Barren wants to paint a sunrise to sunset on the ceiling from one side of the house to the other...
I don't.
We had paint chips taped to the walls for 6 months...but never revisited the idea of color.

We are all about resuscitating things, when we have bought new things they end up not working well for us, so I think we are gun shy at jumping in with both feet.
We got a new mattress two years ago and about 7 months in, it developed a ridge right below the pillow line, like it exploded under the surface...sigh.
It still works as a place to crash, but we feel like we made a bad choice.
We need a new screen door, our beloved kitty bent the frame when he crashed into going after a little bird on the patio. We have nursed it to realign the wheels and pop it back onto the track over and over and over again.
We need a new dishwasher, so last November we pulled it cleaned it, replaced all the hoses and put it back to use....it still works but it needs to be updated for sure. when it runs it is so loud you have to leave the room to have a conversation because it is so loud.
This grown up thing is overrated.

Do you ever feel like, Fuck it I just don't want to deal with this and it won't kill me or anyone else if I just don't deal with it today or for a while...?
I feel like that today.
I am cooked with this grown up thing.

Keep on Trucking

OK
So my last few posts have been heavy and loaded with life crap
I am still in shock but, I finally got some good news

I submitted a portfolio of work that I had hoped :
" demonstrated a professional level of proficiency in the medium"
&
" Work that showed a consistent, well developed artistic vision"

I had waited years to submit to this group,
they hold very high standards and quite frankly,
I was intimidated to try until just now.
They are the oldest guild (of their kind) in the US, started in 1912

I had a "what the fuck" moment and submitted.
This year they also allowed online submissions and
it saved me having to drive several hundred miles to submit my work.
Needless to say I was counting the days as the month grew longer
and when the email finally arrived I was scared
but, the first words were kind so I read further
and it was a congratulations letter!

I told The Barren who in turn wanted to get wasted and hang from the ceiling....
but I was in shock so I told him I only needed a hug.
He was deflated...but gave me a hug.
I am still in disbelief.
I think after all these months of "No Thank Yous"
I am in disbelief that I possessed the ability to make something worthwhile

I finally let The Barren cheer for me and I had a little moment of cheering myself...
I did it.

I also made it through the annual 50,000 mile service update with the doctor.
It was low on drama and I was frank and forthright, and had a list.

I told her quite openly that my relationship with food had dramatically changed,
and that most meals involve guilt and fear.
I told her that I think about everything I eat on a scale of
" would the doctor think this was a right choice"
(How twisted is that! I know it is, but it doesn't stop me from thinking it still)
She looked concerned and after asking some basic do you smoke, how much do you drink, are you exercising questions, she tried to assure me that I am doing good,
that I am in the right BMI (a number I do not believe in)
and that I should keep on trucking

She also diagnosed me with Costochondritis
I have had this for almost a year and aside from feeling like " is this a heart attack?"
and some reassurances from women weightlifters
I was glad to hear that I wasn't in fact imagining it
and I am NOT having heart attacks.

I had fasted for the appointment and by the time I left, I had to give blood too...
that was an hour of waiting and I was famished when I left...
there was a new vegan cafe I had yet to try
so I was the first one in the door when they opened at 11am
(I had been up drinking water since 6am to plump up my veins so the vampire wouldn't miss)
I had their "most popular" sandwich:
a vegan Ruben...after ordering it I wondered if I had made a good choice
mayo-ish stuff, cheeze-ish stuff, sauerkraut
first thing in my tummy for the day...
it looked like this:

watch out tummy here comes what I deem as breakfast

then it looked like this:
after I licked the plate
I wandered home, and did this:

It was a highly productive day
