There and back again

"Sorry for the delay, I have been overwhelmed with caregiving tasks"

This is what I wrote in response to a text from my mother in law. I feel this way a lot now. I am overtaxed, overwhelmed, over run with emotions and haggard.

April marked my 56th birthday.
I spent the month peppering treats for myself in between doctors’ appointments, work responsibilities, managing my immune system and everyday tasks.  I knew The Barren was overworked and wouldn't have the brain capacity to plan anything. I got my bi-annual haircut, a new to me dress, a new vibrator, a new to me vintage point and shoot camera and some plants for my garden. I got The Barren a fancy new showerhead (I give gifts for my birthday) made my brother a couple quiches and treated a friend to an ice cream.
When the actual date rolled around, The Barren and I celebrated my birthday together, which I loved. He had no ideas, because all he can think about is work and so I sat for a moment and thought of trees...and told him I wanted to go forest bathing. It is a bit complex orchestrating it out, as one of the cats had just been put on daily meds, my diet makes traveling a whole thing and our cat sitter was at Stagecoach, and our backup sitter was moving that same weekend for fumigation...BUT we were able to spend two nights away!!
I had spent the week before making birthday cakes, cupcakes and sweets...every cake I made had a shelf life of four hours before becoming dry or dense or chewy?! I make my birthday cake every year since my diet had so many restrictions added...this year was no different. In staying with tradition, we took cupcakes to my parents the night before so I could be with the people who made me. This year was... it was surreal. We arrived, my parents handed me bills (my brother and I handle their payments now) and asked questions about medical appointments and then they walked to the table, sang happy birthday, took a photo and we ate the cupcakes in silence. Packed up the tray and we were back in our car an hour later. It felt very different...disconnected and not really celebratory.
I made note of that in my mind, and it broke my heart a bit more.
The next day was my actual birthday, my other ritual is to take a sunrise yoga class to start the day. I did and much to my surprise, my yoga teacher had placed a sweet gift at the top of my mat while I was sitting with eyes closed before class. When I opened my eyes and discovered it I spent the rest of the class hiding my tears. I was SO overwhelmed by the gesture I just let the tears fall. I was in a dark class so it was easy to hide. I kept thinking of a meditation that was what does kindness look like to you?
I drove home and we spent the day driving to the city outside the National Park. I took photos along the way. Part of this first adventure was that we had recently traded in our older BMW for a used electric car, so this was the maiden road-trip voyage and it required a new learning curve. It is not a tesla so chargers are different and less obvious.
As we drove further away, I was getting texts and calls with birthday wishes and songs. It delighted me. We found a place to get some food that I could make work and we ate in the hotel room in our PJs watching television. When 8:30 pm came around, I called to check in on the parents...they had gone to bed...and when I said we had arrived at the hotel and that I had gotten the loveliest calls all day...it was then that my mother said. What is the date, did we forget to call you?
My parents had forgotten to call me.
The following day was a new page and we drove to the trees...MUCH to our surprise it had SNOWED overnight making the park right out of a fairytale!
I live on the west coast, so this is beyond magic and I was laughing and crying and making strange primal noises when I couldn't form words.
I was in such a deep state of glee I was crying the whole time, everything was SO beautiful and quiet and calm and perfect. I kept turning to The Barren and saying “this is the BEST birthday ever!"
We walked a little in the snow, and saw deer and squirrels and I took lots of photographs. I smelled tree bark, and listened to the crunch/squeaking sound of snow beneath my tennis shoes, got hit in the head with a snowball that fell from a tree and filled my eyes and heart with the forest and gratitude.
As we drove to the next charging station we made promises to each other to return again soon and as often as we could. It was the balm that soothed both our hearts and brains. It was like we had traveled through a portal to another world, because as soon as we left the park, reality returned and our hearts were heavy again. Responsibilities were waiting on voicemails and we drove home quietly trying to ignore them for as long as possible.

Real estate

© The Barreness
A crowd gathered around my work on display

There is nothing to complain about...

Isn't amazing how the one bad thing can ruin the month of good things. It frustrates me, as it gets too much real estate in my mind and then I have to spend so much energy trying to not let it have so much space. It is exhausting.

My work has received so many kind, generous words. Unprompted from strangers and friends alike.

Many of which as surprised by my capabilities, or creativity.

I spend three hours answering questions, and repeating information to visitors during the artists reception. I wore a mask and only got guff from one visitor, to which I responded that I wanted to remain healthy after the evening was over (it was a man, and a figure model at that...)

I was hoarse and overstimulated when the night was over, I spent the following day quiet and writing thank you notes to all who came out the night before.

A success in many ways. My art sold, I was the first sale of the show, and remain to the most sold artist in the exhibition so far. I am hoping that a review will be made my the local paper...I have learned how to make reels of my images on social media. I have been publishing new bits about the work online on a regular basis to keep people engaged and interested in the work...I am soaring with humble pride from months of focused work and it landing well.

The night of the artists reception, I was chatting with a well known painter, and she looked at me in my shimmer and pride and said: " well, how are you going to top this?!" It landed like a javelin, I feared that question. I feared I would have to face my next step instead of enjoying where I had landed....I just smiled and said, I am brainstorming that now.

Two days later I submitted the work to a magazine for hopeful publication, a hope to continue to move the images forward...and this morning (weeks later) I was awoken to a little ping of an incoming email. It was a rejection notice. I stayed in bed longer than normal, feeling the weight of my failure.

I should be happy...and in many ways I am. I am still very proud of the work and hopeful it will grant me more opportunities but in many ways I can't sit and enjoy the moment; I need to think of new things to do, places to email, exhibitions to apply to...it is a frantic pace. I often feel as though, I am in the slow lane of the freeway trying to not get hit by passing cars.
It is exhausting.

So it came as no surprise, that I caught The Barrens cold on the return from his business trip. I nursed him for a week, thinking I was safer than safe...I wiped every surface, wouldn't let him in the kitchen, washed all the blankets...but still I got it. I managed to keep it at bay until after receiving my infusion...and then I crashed. My first cold in over three years! The Barren was stressed from his cold and travel, so I needed to fend for myself and I did my best to not be grumpy or ask for anything while I nursed myself back. Last night was the first real night back to a more normal sense of things...and I am back into the rapids, the fast lane on the freeway, the craziness that is normal for me.

So I am like a surfer, riding waves of joy and sadness.
Thankful in many ways for it all

Familiar Heaviness

**another quarantine ramble**

© The-Barreness.blogspot.com

© The-Barreness.blogspot.com

So here we are in December...it has been a month since we said goodbye to our kitty and I still involuntarily check places he would be. I also have heard little sounds around the home at night and while I sit in the studio thinking, I hear him grooming himself in the chair behind me.

Last night I swear the blankets had a cat on them as they were so heavy when I pulled them up to my chin.

A familiar heaviness.

Maybe that is it, there is a familiar heaviness in the days now.
The long weekend produced over 1600 new cases in my county, and I expect that number to rise even further as the days pass into the new year.
I spoke with the GI about my first colonoscopy and we agreed that me postposing it was safe and I was at a low risk group. The case numbers are climbing too high and I did not want to take medical people away from helping others that are in a much more dire situation than a routine colon screening.
I am getting one, just not while the covid numbers are climbing.

The Barren and I had a mediocre Thanksgiving, we shopped for food and made different food and I tried a new recipe that ended up being long labored and came out quite boring! So that put me into quite an off mood. The Barren had a similar situation with his planned sides, and the bread didn't rise as it should have so we quietly ate a disappointing meal.
When my brother facetimed me the next day, he recounted a similar situation of making big efforts to make something special and it coming out super disappointing.
SUPER BUZZKILL
When I was cooling down from my mild temper tantrum, I mentioned to The Barren,
Why is this different? We have been cooking from home since MARCH.
Making food and trying recipes for months....
Why do we think that thanksgiving is different?
We are thankful and present most days, and give to others every month...
Ugh, it was disappointing to watch others travel and visit others...
Tik Tok had families gathered and boasting that they were all infected...
I am so exhausted of the quarantine,
and being a rule follower.

I am lonely, tired all the time
Pulling myself through daily chores and mediations.
My yoga studio found a loophole and has declared itself a "wellness center"
so they are now teaching indoor classes, and have reduced the park classes.
So I fill my schedule with pre-recorded videos and go to the park two times a week to practice at 8 ft away in a mask nearby others.
The studio classes are full (10people per class) and filled with 20-30yr olds.
I am not the studios demographic.
It all makes me feel old and "responsible"
(a label I was given in my 20's and I have tried to fight it, but I am; I am responsible)

Thanksgiving weekend also got us to send our holiday cards out...
(responsible)
We had a portrait taken by a photographer I have admired for a decade, she does Ambrotype portraits and we did one for our 18th wedding anniversary and used it as our card this year.

I got a call from my parents last night that it had arrived and that it was "interesting"
which is coded language for " I don't like it"
sigh

I will leave this post of rambling about the mundane on a high note...
I dropped of my artwork to the gallery for the year end big event!
No reception this year, but a lot of buzz as always...
My piece sold in the first 2hours!!
I don't know who bought it, I will inquire later, but I am happy to have that pressure taken off my chest.
A sale means two things:
1. I have a new collector
2. I get invited back the next year to submit again !
Of the 11 years I have been invited I have sold work in 9 of them.
then when I thought that was my high of the day
I posted a drawing I did of a musician playing their instrument and tagged them on social media.
That musician not only commented on the work
but BOUGHT a different piece of my art from my ETSY shop!!!
I have to admit, I did one heck of a happy dance.
so there was that too.
A roller coaster of emotions.
Much like the fluctuation in temperature from day to day.

Half a century

I chickened out and stayed away from my parents home.
It broke my heart, but I understand that even if we never got near each other it was a risk I was not willing to take in their health or ours.

So I had a Facetime call with them followed by a zoom call with some friends.
I had sent out invitations to join the call and half way through got self conscience and stopped emailing peeps and then with the gentle nudge of The Barren,
I sent it out like a crazy shotgun blast to a bunch of people.
Everyone said they would attend and then I freaked out again....
but like parties of the past, not everyone showed up, which was fine.

I did my hair and wore something other than a sweatshirt...and had a pre-meeting freak-out about how everyone was going to be looking at me and I suddenly looked like a tired old woman.

Letting Myself Go Online Shopping | Gin & Lemonade

I moved the ipad and swallowed my pride and got on camera.
It was lovely..and SUPER SURREAL!!
I offered my homemade cupcakes to the crowd...
my brother had made a snack tray and had nibbles on camera at his home,
a neighbor couple wore green mustaches,
another couple of people had glasses of wine, a cousin showed off her new baby chicks.
We took tours of each others living rooms and yards.

Then something absolutely humbling happened....
everyone started to show off artwork they had of mine.
I was floored and so deeply touched!
I mean really touched and humbled.
Someone suggested they sing happy birthday
and the song sounded like it was being sung in a round...which was super funny.
When the call ended I took a shower and fell into a nap!

Two days later I got a gift delivered from a painter friend.
I had sat for her in 2013 while she explored options for a portrait project.
She gifted me the study she did of me.
It is a good likeness of me and I sent a photo of me next to the painting to her
and she posted it on social media.
I feel like I need a manor home to hang a portrait of myself, it seems very Georgian.
Today I received another gift from another painter friend of poppies.
She said that I came into her mind when she was making it and felt I should have it.

50 is full of surprises so far
It was not what I thought it would be, or how I thought it would be celebrated.
It felt nice to do something with my hair and "dress up"
It was fun to make myself a birthday cake
and have a local bakery deliver cupcakes to my parents so we could still do our annual birthday cake for breakfast together (apart)
I could actually feel my heart refueling from the love that was shared with me on my group call.
Never mind the high level of anxiety, I was aware of the feeling and took a moment to feel it all and soak it in.
I am thankful for that!

One on One time

It seems to have become an annual event.
Every July we get some serious one-on-one time with our closest nephew.
Closest, meaning proximity.

*(there are two other nephews, but their parents and years of no responses to requests or cards...has created a distance in what we had hoped to be a relationship with them.)

ANYWAYS.....
this year was the longest amount of time with our nephew, he was at our place for three nights.
He is 11 and totally into Manga comics and video games and cartoons and KITTENS
Our old man cat wanted nothing to do with his attempts at snuggles or pats...
he chose to spend his time curled under my desk sleeping on the power strip and sulking
 at HIS unwanted company.

So I suggested that we go to the Humane Society and check out kittens.
I am not sure I totally thought the idea through when it came to my own mental health about seeing touching or interacting with kittens....
I am still quite broken from the loss of our kitty back in February and now the aging cat at home...
I am dealing with a lot of mortality in felines.

We went for half an hour on the first visit because we were meeting Uncle for lunch and and needed to pick up food before seeing him....I thought it would be and easy in and out...
It was easy to get in and out...but I was very standoff-ish with all kitties.
The following day he mentioned he wanted to go back and visit them again....
I figured it would be fine and it took a chunk of time of the day and it made him happy.
We returned and there were twice as many kittens and cats...
9week old kittens, to mature cats...
he wanted to snuggle them all...it made him so happy and smile so big...
I watched him, and offered help when claws were too sharp or wiggles too strong.

This sweet little kitty is the one that made me cry.
As I was handed this kitten, so he could play with another eager soul...
I held it close to my chest and it melted into purrs and I turned away from my nephew...
tears welling in my eyes, feeling the soft fur and rumbles of the purr against my chest.
Before the tears could fall, I told him that my heart hurt and that we should move on to the older cats...or dogs.
He was a little confused but was willing to move onto the next room.

The second visit was all about making sure to see and say hello to every kitten and cat, and then hello to every dog. That sweet little boy even sat with a dog that had a "I'm shy" sign on her kennel for almost a half an hour to make her feel better.
When the time came to leave, he said goodbye to every dog, cat and kitten.
and told me that he felt badly that he could not take them home.

I assured him that what he was feeling was empathy and compassion and that those are really wonderful emotions and that means that you are a loving person and capable of loving other beings.

The next morning I saw that one the kittens he was crazy about was adopted, and shared the news with him, his smile was huge...and he said- that is so great!
He is still to young to volunteer without and adult....but I mentioned it to him and his parents.

I spent three days, all day with my nephew...in the evenings The Barren made sure I took some quiet time for myself before bed.
I was exhausted, the nephew would have active dreams at night and call out waking The Barren and myself. He was fighting with his sisters in his dreams...having things taken by them. He remembers none of the dreams and awoke each morning happy and ready to be entertained.

I loved the time, and tried really hard to give him loads of space and time to just be.
Pool time, puzzle time, reading time, park time, making cookies, we even watched surfers and he declared he wanted to do that too.
I listened to exaggerated stories and claims, I sat and watched cartoons and simply soaked him in.
I introduced him to Bob Marley music and we sang along to Queen songs.

I do hope that he remembers being able to just be himself when he is with us.
I really love being his Auntie

Summertime Rolls

I am in this photo, right there with my butt up in the air

This is the Saturday morning class I love to take...
the teacher places a COLD washcloth's on each persons face afterwards and it is a slice of heaven!

it is sometimes a struggle to get there because it ends half an hour after farmers market starts and if you are a regular farmers market goer, you know the best stuff is right when they open...so it is a practice of letting shit go and enjoying being at class, then enjoying the pace of the market when I arrive afterwards. I am also not one of those ladies that
loves to wear her yoga clothes to do errands and stuff...
so the looks from the farmers while I try and hide a camel toe or my body odor is something too.
I pretend to be blissfully unaware of the stares...

The summer is passing and it seems that the activity I am most often partaking in is sweating...
sweat overnight, wake up and go to yoga and sweat, come home shower and try to not sweat (unsuccessful at that still) then sweat while cooking dinner and cleaning up, evening shower
 and repeat
it probably doesn't help that most of my state is on fire and there has been heat wave after heat wave....so I am not sure if this is a peri-menopausal thing or simply summer.
I am gonna say it is summer because the other option sux!

We have watched friends go on vacations, kids go to summer camp,
and we have even been host to a couple visitors.
Alas, we have not escaped.

I was told that my work was taking a few days off to spend time with family and I got very excited at the idea of not having to commute for a while week...but they shortened the vaca and it fell on the days I am normally not there so no real vacation for me.

I am doing my best to make it productive none the less
but...I got my period and now I am either sweat sleeping or trying to not eat everything in the house.
Happy summer vacation!

I am still trying....I canceled yoga for myself this week...
it is good to rest every now and then...and I think I need it, plus if I am sweating all day and my uterus is a battleground why not sit back and watch the show.
I don't need to prove to myself that I can still do my thing...
my newly built muscles are not going to disappear overnight.
It will all be alright.

It is summertime, eat some watermelon...
sleep a little later when you can, go for a drive somewhere
collect a few interesting things to remember this time, take some photos.
I mean isn't that what Summer Vacation use to be?!

Goals and Birthdays

vanilla cake, lime coconut frosting vegan birthday cupcakes

I am not sure why, but I seem to always be SUPER emotional and goal oriented around my birthday.
I had set a goal for myself last year and when I didn't met it I was disappointed
but kept moving towards it.
It is something I have wanted to be able to do for longer than I can remember...
It represents a symbol of strength to me...
It is pretty badass
It is something most people can do with almost no effort

What is it?
A pushup
yep...

I have never been able to do one
I want to be able to do one, and not a "girl" push-up
but a kick-ass real deal push-up

I have been working on it for a LONG time...
and I am proud to report I did it in front of The Barren on the eve of my
48th birthday, Tuesday night.
The Barren cried he was so happy for me (heart swelling)

I am also of the camp that if it is not documented it didn't really happen
and being a visual person, I needed to photograph it
so I did:

Elbows in against my ribs
down to a 90* bend
ass up, knees off the floor
legitimate push-up folks!

Triangle Goddess

extended triangle

The triangle that points downward is one of the oldest symbols of the divine power of the female. It is an ancient symbol that represents the genitalia of a goddess. The triangle is connected to the number three which can represent true
wisdom

I have explored photographing my practice at home, to see how my form is and compare it to that of instruction online and then practice in class. Instagram is amazing as a yoga resource! This pose has always been one of my favorites and after looking up the meaning, I was happy to see that even unconsciously I am moving in the right direction.

Celebrating the divine within me

Unleashing

I saw this today and thought
"My gawd I love this woman"

I am working on unleashing this woman;
she lives inside me and I seem to always want to keep her contained...
it is time for her to run free

Politics, babies and my body

I'm here....
that latest round of colds, flus and colds hit this house hard....
and aside from some morning nausea I am back to "normal"

Politics:
I am so fired up about maintaining my rights; the rights of  my nieces and nephews,
that I re-registered so that I could vote in the primary here in the States.
I was registered with a party that would only allow me to vote party line.
I needed to change that.
I am so upset, and frustrated with the casual misogyny, hate speak, fear mongering and general shit talk that I chose to not sit idyll and instead do what I could to make changes.
I normally don't talk politics and this is as far as I will go...
I am mad as hell and I am not going to take it any longer

Babies:
I have two baby gifts in read to be packed up, as more people are preggers.
I would say I am pretty unfazed by it, but in all honesty, I haven't been around them while they are blossoming. What I did have a physical reaction to was a casual mention of an impromptu baby shower for a fellow artist...I felt my stomach clench and then race through the monologue of
"I don't do baby showers, I am happy to send a gift but I am not going to attend"
I decided that, that event has WAY too many triggers for me and so I choose to avoid them....
like the boogie man!

My body:
I stumbled on this project and there is a whole section on fertility, here is one with a statement about the portrait subject:
As mentioned before, I am floating farther away from my sole identity as an infertile woman.
It is bittersweet...but I think a natural progression with age and peace.
I have recently purchased a vintage photograph of a child.
It resonated in me when I saw it.
So I bought it, and when it arrived I matted and framed it and added it to my personal altar.
I allows me to see a manifestation of a child that makes me feel happy.
Like a moment from a daydream captured.
It has settled something in me.

Run over

So last week I was dead set on going back to yoga after missing the week because of my head-cold...and I arrived to my class on Friday with a sore stomach and feeling sweaty.
I brushed it aside to peri-menopausal symptoms and that I ate too much cabbage the night before.
Plus now I am convinced that the heated room
and a good sweat can solve all coming cooties and ickies.

I got settled into class, and I started to feel dizzy...
OK move slow...
then the face-down poses started and the pressure on my stomach was not good....
then the standing was iffy, then the forward fold...
and a "wet burp".
I calmly walk out of class and await the following...nothing.
Performance anxiety

I try and return to class to finish and it is made PERFECTLY CLEAR
that is not going to happen!
Defeated, I roll up my mat, take my cold sweaty body to the showers,
get dressed and head to work....

Wrong choice number 2

I am able to stay for about an hour,
before I need to get into my car to head home.
Along the drive I think of all the errands I still need to do...
and then I head a voice in my head.
"take care of yourself, don't do anything but go home"
I reason with myself that I can take the mail the following day to get postage...

I make it home to see the neighbor walking his toddler and newborn, he looks up at me as I am exiting my car and says hey how ya doing?
I say " I'm sick keep a distance"
he says yeah, I'm trying to keep her head out of it,
she just tossed all down the front of me,
referencing the swaddled newborn he was attached to.
I suddenly image the smell of curdled milk....
I made it in the house, up the stairs and to the bathroom just in time to lose it....

The rest of the day was spent shivering,
sweating and sleeping until The Barren made it home from work
with anti nausea medicine and saltines.
He rescued me once again.

Why do I go into details?
If I had a child this would have been made SOOOO MUCH MORE complicated
I was thankful that I just needed to deal with me that day
as I could barely do that.
This last weekend was spent recovering
Then....
The Barren started to not feel well again, we have
both been battling something for the last two weeks!
Now he is headed off to the doc as his cough is sounding different
and keeping sleeping at bay.

I joked with a friend that 46 is HARD
I got to be a birthday girl for three days and then I got sick!
Can I call a do over?

Then after this last weekend I told The Barren that I was in
metamorphosis and that I am gonna be one DAMN fine butterfly
when this was gone.
I refuse to let everything lead to something bad any longer!

Things I can do

So I have been busy with my personal self created to-do lists.
Top on that list was (see I did it) updating my personal artist website.
My old website was managed and maintained by a friend...and by friend I mean ex-boyfriend.
I maintain a relationship with my ex, it has been over 25 years now.
The Barren has zero issue with this, and I am beyond thankful that one of the many fine qualities is that he understands that people mean something to me, and that my past comes with me.
So having a relationship with my ex totally makes sense to him and he respects that.

We (ex and I) decided long ago that we could not throw away all the time we had spent together,
so we would stay friends, plus it was the adult thing to do.
I know that this is quite unique and makes some people very uncomfortable...but that is just a fact.
He decided to sleep with someone else, so I left him (had to get a jab in there somewhere)
I met The Barren about 6months there after.

I am not going to say that we had a perfect relationship, or that this friendship has not be hard at times, but we both feel it is worth maintaining it.
We were young and said hurtful things, I lost myself in the process. Some of what was done/said has taken a long time to grow past or let go of...but time marched on and we seem to always go to one another for some sense of support or creative guidance.
His partner (the same one he was with when we were together) had a hard time getting on board with it, but has come to understand that this friendship is not going anywhere
and it is not a threat to them or her.

Over the years the ex has helped me make creative decisions, and is a good editor and creative sounding board and reference guide. We help each other out with creative things as we seem to understand each other that way still.

I had been wrestling with website design options and he stepped in and researched all the pros and cons of each, helping me see the highlights of them. I get overwhelmed with minute details and he helped clear that up.
We had decided to met face to face to discuss the final player/options and styles etc...at a coffeehouse he'd never been to before...I had been emailing and texting with him constantly but had not seen him face to face in over two years!
When the time came for us to meet, he was no where to be found...
I could feel my heart pounding and all these feeling from when I was a teenager came back...
he is blowing me off
he "forgot"
his partner had a tantrum and he is not coming

I texted The Barren and asked how long to wait...he responded that the ex is notoriously late, and to give it a half an hour. I paced in my mind while trying to maintain my composure in my seat...slowly sipping tea. When the half hour mark arrived I slowly packed up my things and decided to walk around the block, thinking I'd catch him just arriving or check another nearby coffee house that maybe he was there instead.
Turns out that he was, at another location...the first one we talked about meeting at...but changed from that place to the new one.
When he saw me, he gave me a look that made me feel like a silly 19yr old again...he was disappointed, frustrated and convinced that I had gotten it all wrong.
I took a deep breath maintained a smile and said, "I'm glad we found each other."
He said he had looked into the coffee shop I was waiting in but, didn't dare enter it as he had never been there before. So he returned to the original local assuming I'd be there.
(I was sitting at a table that was blocked by a stone column so he could not see me from the outside).
We walked back to the coffee shop I had just left, in time for me to continue finishing my tea (they hadn't even cleared the cup and pot yet)
He sat down and we began to catch up a little. I mostly listened, he was nervous and it was awkward...needless to say we chatted and switched to a smaller table when we realized we didn't need a wall plug as originally thought.
The morning sun was out and beaming me right in the eye and side of my face...making me sit back farther and farther..the ex noted that he could see the sun beaming me, but that he was in the shade and so didn't stop conversation, it did make me realize a simple and sweet thing about The Barren*

The talk of the website was minor, as I had most of my ideas clearly set and when I had had enough of the sun and the conversation had turned to filler I offered to drive him home, so he didn't have to walk back. We drove back to his place, I dropped him off at the curb and waved goodbye.

I then proceeded to go home, set up my account, and begin designing the new website.
In the last week it has formed into a completed vision, that I made all on my own.
The kick start was a rough one, mostly filled with self doubt over my abilities,
but that turned out to be smoke and mirrors and trick doors.
I even designed a new name logo....
I sent a link to the ex last night declaring that it was live, and he responded that it looked great!
I was quite proud of myself.

I feel as though I am free from a shadow.
Like his control over my web presence is no longer over me...
I have taken back control over me again.
I doubted my abilities but I was wrong....
I can do it, and well at that!

*The Barren always makes sure I am out of the sun, if I was at this table with The Barren, we would have packed up and moved to another with no words or fuss...just a matter of fact and no pause in conversation.

It is amazing how things from many years ago can still feel so fresh and accessible in our hearts.
The ex has never wished any ill will on me and always expressed his desire that nothing come in my way, so I continue to pursue my art...in fact when I told him I was getting married, he wanted to make sure that The Barren would never snuff out my artistic desires or freedom of motion.
Then declared he was off to join the French foreign legion...hahaha
When I told him I couldn't have kids, he sent a sweet note that it was super sad, and wished it would be different for us.

He broke my heart 25 years ago, but in the middle of it all I had the strength to march onward with my head held high and find myself again and the person I was meant to spend my lifetime with.
I am thankful, he in turn found his life mate too.
We have grown since then, said a lot of "I didn't mean that" and versions of "I'm sorry" and can now joke about things...
at least I can, in fact I still refer to a painting he gave me when we broke up as
"what I got in the divorce settlement"

I can hold my head up high, feel smart and do things without hesitation.
I can do all these things!

I have to remind myself

physical memories
So the new year has started and now we are almost done with this first month!
I am finding that I am experiencing a little struggle, mostly kicking myself into the right lane...

I made a list one morning while eating, trying to make it like an "automatic writing" experiment.
I only post it here so that I am reminded that these are the first things that came to mind and they are good ideas to strive for always...not just for this year.
this is what I came up with:

be more present
be more honest & true
use kinder words in self talk
go to yoga as often as I can afford
make/experiment
stop comparing myself to others in stressful situations
read more books
embrace your laughter
paint your nails
learn to braid-for real
keep letting go
stop apologizing for nothing
make new friends/situations
do less home chores-you get lost in them
draw more
write more
be less afraid

I have found that "keep letting go" is the one theme I have revisited the most so far;
and I am finding that it is mostly in regards to physical things.

I cleared out my closet, and loving placed many items that I had emotional connections with into a box to give away.
I cleaned out under my bathroom sink and threw out the last pregnancy test I had squirreled away.
I said out loud, I will never use you and get the answer I want.
Those seemed easy.
Today, while trying to clear out some studio clutter I came across these old pocket calendars.
I took copious notes in each, recording my daily appointments, birthdays, anniversaries and happenings, tracking my periods and noting my miscarriages.
I think I kept them as I didn't want to trow out these markers, like I was saving them for someone.
Today I chose to toss them into the recycling bin.
I carry these memories in my heart. I don't need to fear that I will loose them by throwing out the reminders of the dates. I can still carry those with me, regardless of where the original note is.

As for the Mudman of New Guinea, is a picture I cut from a travel magazine,
they were on a bucket list many moons ago.
That too has faded into the past.
both are bittersweet, but not forgotten.
I have to remind myself of that.

Time passes

As time passes I am finding myself identifying less and less as an infertile woman
and simply a woman without children.
Maybe those words place less blame, or guilt.
Maybe that is simply growing.

I have even considered unsubscribing from some websites and blogs that are in the middle of their discovery. Not because I do not want to offer support but simply because it is energy I have spent and can not afford to spend any longer.
I guess this time passing, has distanced me from the central heart of the pain.
The pain is no longer raw
The pain only appears in small short moments.
I am no longer consumed by the monster
The Barreness seems to have stopped poking me
at least that is how it feels right now.

I had a successful exhibition, in fact I sold one of my pieces before the show opened
and the other on opening night!

I felt like I was floating on a lily-pad, afraid to move to quickly
and fall into the cold murky pond.
But it was real, I really did it.
A fellow art friend told me I was no longer allowed to feel surprised by my art sales.
I had sold work every year from that show and it was time to get over it.
I smiled
and then told The Barren, over sake shots after the event, that I liked
life surprises, and that not feeling a bit of shock and disbelief seemed unnatural for me.
I deserve this success, and I deserve to feel proud
but I also can enjoy the surprise and glee associated with a sale.

We have been running non stop for most of this month already,
social commitments and events.
Now we are done, and just have the holidays to figure out.

We went to our last social commitment last night and it was hosted by a painter friend who has a big show opening in New York on Tuesday. She filled her home with friends and family for an annual get together. Since last years event, she has had a baby and so have many of her friends. In fact at one point, the house was filled with little kids and toddlers screaming, running and slamming doors while two very patient boston terriers watched and avoided them. I sat on the couch with three friends across from The Barren who was chatting with the spouses of the the friends and found myself unconcerned about the chaos.
In fact, totally unfazed.
I didn't need to find my kid, or ask the kids to stop....
not my monkeys, not my circus

As we were gathering up to leave I looked down to put on my coat
and saw a little green chair, with a pair of little shoes in it.
it was sublime and sweet and
The Barren and I both just exhaled and moved on to saying our goodbyes

It is moments like that, that I realize that time has passed.
The moments of a magical childhood for our never to be child have begun to age.
We are learning to live life again, be who are suppose to be after all that we have been
and all that we can still be.

Remembering Death and Life Lived

I had been wanting to go to an event in a nearby major city for several years now, but never had the right timing or drive. So when a buddy called and said she'd drive and wanted to go right after they opened I cleared my schedule and said I'll buy your ticket!
It turned out to be just what I needed and
aside from a set of scabs from my new sandals it was a great day!

The Dia de Los Muertos festival takes over whole sections of the cemetery
it is a mix of altars and memorial structures and vendors selling all things related to the holiday.
There are face painters and food vendors too.
Live music, native dancers and people
AMAZING people watching!!

I celebrate this holiday, as it is the anniversary of The Barren and I getting married.
We purposely chose this day, as it is when the veil is the thinnest between the two worlds
( the living and the dead)
so we knew that anyone of our loved ones could attend the wedding if they choose to.
It is also around the same time as the first of our miscarriages.
So I feel like our babies can feel our love the most around now.
It is a good cathartic way to celebrate, remember and mourn loved ones.
It is all in the spirit of love
and who could not love that !

I took my camera and the below are some of the fun results

Girlfriends all dressed for the day
(everyone was willing to have their photo taken, no one said no)

Jaguar dancer looking at some of the altars
crazy face painting!

Some famous cool dudes are buried here

LOVED her headpiece,
it sparkled and was amazing dancing with the light

Cat memorial in the wall of marigolds
this broke my heart and had me close to tears
I was glad The Barren was home with our lovelies

A Frida Kahlo sculpture complete
with a reproduction of her chest cast and lost baby.
I wanted to take this home.

Your favorite leaf eater
with one of the many paper mache sculptures
it was 90* (32c) , hence the sleeveless top

I took away a lot of ideas for our personal altar this year.
I was able to be quiet most of the day and just look, which was a gift beyond words.
I have a couple friends that understand quiet doesn't mean that I don't want to talk to you, but instead I am talking so much to myself I can't bear to say words aloud.

Side Swiped

So it appears to be baby shower season...at least that is what it feels like.
When I got word of the first one,
I put on my big girl pants, superhero cape and lasso of power
and quickly said:
" I can't go"
It felt powerful and right!
I was quite proud of myself.
What was ever cooler was that my SIL
(who was throwing the party for her sister)
looked at me and said, OK
and left it at that.
I was super happy that there was no drama
I made time one day and made the baby shower gifts,
and packed them up way ahead of the event and laid that to rest.

The second shower invite is coming soon,
I am not going to that one either.
The baby gifts are made and packed away too.

I have told The Barren so that he is well aware that I will be somewhere else,
doing something else.
Hopefully the mother to be will be distracted by her dozens of guests and not
fixate on me not attending
(like I am that important)

The two mothers to be are very different,
one got pregnant quickly and with no assistance
the other one, My SIL's sister, spent years trying and
eventually got pregnant and was on bed rest the whole pregnancy.
When my SIL told me she was pregnant I was so happy fro her, when she said her sister was suffering from morning sickness I said that is great...I was happy for her, she was finally pregnant!

Her shower was to be tomorrow, she was driving my SIL crazy with her vision
of how everything should be.

(on a side-note, I spoke with my mother and said that I TOTALLY understood this side of the coin. She has sacrificed her body, her finances, her relationship... everything to become a mother
...and now that she is one, she wants everything to be as she imagined it to be. It is her vision of the dream...she is wanting to be the pretty princess from the fairy tale, the happily ever after)

BUT... her water broke today and she is currently in labor.
Shower canceled.

I am finding that thinking about her becoming a mother has side swiped me with a lot of emotions
I thought I was past...or OK with but,
I was crying earlier...hearing in my head
That was suppose to be you
You will never be that woman in labor
you failed

I know that these are The Barreness creeping in with her spells and intoxicating words
I know that some of those things might be true,
but
I did not fail
The idea of this woman becoming a mother is bittersweet.
In my sorrow I texted her other sister,
who is also infertile from secondary infertility
Just telling her that I was thinking of her,
as I am sure today is a mixed bag of emotions for her as well
She thanked me for understanding the pain and emotion of the day.

Meanwhile,
The other mother to be is a rockstar, still doing crossfit at 7+month pregnant
feeling great and happy and dealing with everything like well, it is no big deal
She makes it look so easy
aside from her mentioning in conversations that well " because I am pregnant..."
I can even hang out with her and not want to punch myself in the face.
but today...today it might be harder

I know it will pass
and that a good sweat in class will clear this all out of my pores,
but today, today I just want to be
free enough to feel my independence from these feelings again

Eve'of

This is the eve of my 45th birthday.
What an amazing gift this is!

I have made it this far,
although it has not always been smooth sailing
I have made great efforts to see past pain,
figure out how to better myself,
how to give more,
how to be more compassionate and empathetic.

I am thankful that:
My body has carried me across paths I hadn't planned to take,
my lungs have provided enough air to cry and laugh.
My eyes have given me vision to distance myself or move closer.
My voice has always been there to speak up.

I look forward to seeing new amazing sites
Feeling deep, lovely new feelings
Smiling a lot easier
and sleeping more peacefully.

I am here, and on the edge of great new possibilities for myself

Niece

My niece just celebrated her 11th birthday!
I think I am still in shock
*Sigh*
I remember rushing the the hospital when my SIL was in labor and thinking, maybe I will be here next, tucked away in a labor and delivery room while everyone else waits on our child's arrival.

We had her little brother over the night before the party, for an overnight and a marathon session of Minecraft with his uncle. We ate and gamed and then loaded him into the car for the party...working hard to keep him awake along the 45minute drive home.

My niece had only a few friends over, although she invited her entire class of 30+ kids, only 9 or so said they'd come. It ended up being a good small party where she was not so overwhelmed that she could be social with everyone, including the two boys that came.
I introduced myself to every kid as the birthday girls Auntie
which seemed to make them all feel at ease.
It was a 50's theme and I took photos
Since all these kids grew up around camera phones, no one had an issue having their photo taken, or their activities documented.
Most of them posed anytime the camera was anywhere near my face.

In fact, they were so relaxed that when they had a trivia question, they asked me first:
Was Michael Jackson's music popular in the 50's?
I held it together and explained that he wasn't, and that he didn't start singing until the 60's with his brothers in the Jackson Five.
No one danced but it was a social peek into the mind and body language of tween.

When it was time for pin the tail on the donkey, my niece did a clothing change and came out in her skinny jeans, mini heels and tank top, still sporting her eye liner and lipstick that her mom applied earlier. My brother and hubby took a deep sigh, as this was the moment when she started looking like a teenager, a heartbreak, someone they need to worry about, someone who was suddenly becoming themselves, or trying to.

I remember 11, I was beyond awkward. Self-assured, but shaky in my convictions.
Not this lady....she is sturdy in her beliefs and self.

When it was time to have cake she posed with her cupcakes and kids descended on them like they hadn't just eaten the hamburgers and french fries and milkshakes my brother and SIL had just fed them. I have been given the great pleasure of making the birthday cakes for all of my brothers kids. Since birth!
I explained to them that I would not be able to make cakes for my own kids and that this would give me so much pleasure....and save them cash...so whether it is one dozen cupcakes or four dozen cupcakes I am your girl! Plus I also make a personal cake for the birthday kid, to do with what they wish. When the kids were little little they were able to put their fist in the cake or face in the cake and enjoy it in their own way, while their guest could enjoy a booger free cupcake of their own.
Free from cooties and saliva.

My nieces cake was presented on an vinyl album, and made to look like a record.
Her request, and the cake was chochochocholate, with chocolate chips inside the cake.
She tore it apart and ate it with a fork, but the pleasure was in dismantling it as she saw fit.

She is 11 now, and it feels like time is speeding up
Maybe it is that I am more present, or she is more mature
either way,
I just hope she can always be true to herself,
and talk openly with me when she needs something
big or small, like what she wants next years cake to look like.
